Description
Tom and Steve Waters never set out to create a brewery, but life had other plans. They grew up in Carson, a small Washington community tucked away in the woods, where their dad, Jim, spent his downtime whipping up craft beer experiments after long days at the sawmill. He was a natural, crafting small-batch brews with a keen eye for flavour while his curious sons observed and learned at every step. In 2012, Jim finally launched Backwoods, starting small in the back of the family grocery store. Once Tom finished school, he and his wife returned to Carson to help out. Steve, fresh from an accounting stint at Moss Adams, soon followed. The brothers realized their dad’s fledgling brewery held real potential, so they teamed up and gradually took over from him. By 2016, they moved into a larger production facility in Stevenson, laying the groundwork for further expansion. Today, Backwoods boasts two additional spots: a laid-back urban retreat in Portland, and a family-friendly hub in Hillsboro. While they’re best known for their classic Logyard IPA, they also whip up playful seasonal brews like S’mores Stout and Blueberry Wheat Ale, keeping their dad’s inventive spirit alive and well.
