Description

Co-owners Tom and Steve Waters never intended to start a brewery. The brothers grew up in Carson, a tiny community in rural Washington, where their father, Jim, spent his free hours experimenting with craft beer after long days at the sawmill. He was exceptionally skilled, crafting small-batch brews while his sons observed and learned. In 2012, Jim decided to open Backwoods, beginning with small batches in the family’s grocery store. After finishing school, Tom and his wife returned to Carson to help grow the operation. Steve, who earned an accounting degree from the University of Portland and worked at Moss Adams, also came back when he saw the potential. Together, the brothers gradually took over from Jim, moving the brewery into a larger production facility in Stevenson in 2016. They have since opened two more locations: an urban retreat in Portland and a family-friendly space in Hillsboro. While Backwoods is best known for its signature Logyard IPA, they also brew fun seasonal favourites like S’mores Stout and Blueberry Wheat Ale. Looking ahead, Tom and Steve remain committed to quality and innovation, honouring their dad’s pioneering spirit every step of the way.
