Description
This brewery’s history goes back to 1719 and has been continuously owned by one family, the Swinkels, since 1773. Still to this day, the Bavaria board consists entirely of members of the seventh generation. This makes it one of the oldest Dutch family businesses in the country. In the early 1900s, many small breweries failed but the Swinkels held their position by consistently responding to market changes and breeding new products into the market. The three brothers Frans, Piet, and Jan, made the switch to a low-fermentation beer (pilsner) which became a highly sought-after product, and ultimately secured the foundation of Bavaria as we currently know it. The family has taken great pride in continuing to malt their own grains (barley), ensuring full control over the quality of their malts. Another great feature is that the brewery has its own natural mineral water source, which is a very important ingredient in the making of fabulous beer. Bavaria was also one of the first to introduce non-alcoholic beers to the world and built a strong reputation for their 0.0% Bavaria Original. In 2019 the brewery celebrated its 300th anniversary. The family earned a Royal Distinction from Queen Máxima. They are still the largest independent brewery in the Netherlands and they export to more than 130 countries.
