Profile

Smell

For all the talk on the can, most of what you’re going to pick up will be the strong malt and coffee aromas. There’s a hint of the hops in the background, but only a little flutter.

Taste

Delivers on the brown ale checklist: warm, strong malt flavour up front, medium-roast coffee beans, chocolate, and biscuit. But it also has a floral hop character that balances really well with the whole picture and adds some flair to the taste. Hits fast and runs away, so let it warm up a touch to really get everything out of it. Finishes up with a touch of dryness.

Pairing

A great candidate for a roasted Pork Shoulder with potatoes and roasted carrots.

Sight

Pours deep and dark, heading for stout territory, with low carbonation. A thick, frizzy head of chocolate bubbles rests at the top of the glass.

Description

Two brothers got together and decided they didn’t need their savings anymore, starting up Common Crown Brewing Co. in the northeast of Calgary. Fortunately, the endeavour has been a success, and for nearly 8 years they’ve been producing quality craft beer in the savage market of Calgary’s brewing scene. Over those years, Common Crown has produced two dozen beers, covering some of the classic styles from the Old World. Common Crown is dedicated to providing great beer for the community and supporting efforts to improve Calgary, including fundraising for children’s health, homeless support, and more. The Coppersmith is a full-bodied brown ale that lives right in the pocket of the style. Strong malt, warm chocolate notes, roasted coffee, and crisp biscuit. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for six months.
