Description
When the oil industry in Alberta slowed down, an opportunity presented itself to Dog Island owners, Ben Fiddler and Chad Paulson to change careers and brew in their home base of Slave Lake, Alberta. By trade Ben work as a dual ticketed tradesman doing instrumentation and electrical and when he was in school, he ended up fixing up some equipment at a local brewpub for the head brewer. In return the head brewer taught him how to brew. It was a past-time that he spent hours on with his now partner Chad Paulson. In 2013 when the oil industry shifted, the boys decided to put all their eggs in one basket and build a brewery. That was no small feat, considering that there was nothing like it in the area. They had to start from scratch and help create the zoning, rules, etc. After all of this, the brewery opened in 2016 to a large warm reception from the locals of Slave Lake. The whole team of 12 are pretty much from the trade industry, so naturally the motto at the brewery is do it yourself. The atmosphere is laid back and very welcoming. The currently run with 18 taps, nine core beers and seasonals as well. Small distribution is the name of the game, Dog Island is a local’s favourite and that’s the way they want it to stay.
