Description

Sean Hoyne is one of the lucky ones who got to study craft beer under one of the pioneers of the North American microbrewery movement, Frank Appleton. Sean began his craft beer journey like most brewers, by brewing beer at home with his brothers In Montreal. It was while he was stationed in Victoria, studying for his English Literature degree that brought him into contact with Frank. Following his passion, he applied for a job as a brewer at a local brewpub. It was here that he began his internship of sorts with Frank, as he was given the opportunity of a lifetime to be the brewer at Buckerfields. No small feat, considering he didn’t have any professional experience. But the two hit it off at the very start and Frank decided to take a chance on Sean. Sean helped build Buckerfields with Frank and developed another brewery, Swans Brewpub. With all the experience he was accruing, he eventually became the head brewmaster of the breweries. After years in the industry, in 2009 Sean began plans to follow his dreams and open up his brewery. In 2011 he made a deal with Grant Olsen, co-owner of the Strathcona Hotel to lease the brewing equipment that was left over from the former brewpub Hugo’s. With this small brewing system, Sean brewed his very first batches of Hoyne beer: Down Easy Pale Ale, Dark Matter, Hoyne Pilsner, and Devil’s Dream IPA. The rest they say, is history.
