Profile

Smell

The toasted grain of the brown ale comes off as much sweeter on the nose than you might expect. The hops are present, delivering some earthy, pine aroma.

Taste

The strong roasted elements take it down a notch on the palate, letting the toasted grain and the sharper pine hops come together into one coherent flavour. That roasted start is a touch rough, but as it combines there’s a bit of sweetness that comes in and the hops move toward an herbal flavour that leavens out the rest. Smooth body with a touch of dryness on the finish and a hint of toasted flavour in the aftertaste.

Pairing

A good pairing for any meat coming off the grill or for a nice charcuterie.

Sight

Pours a deep brown colour with a fairly murky body and high carbonation. A lot of small bubbles spring out of the can, frothy and angry, but they chill down to a pillowy head.

Description

Throwing an Iron Hat into the craft brewing ring in Alberta is a bold move, but this newly minted craft brewery out of Brooks, Alberta has done just that and seen success. A quick hop off the number two highway coming heading to Edmonton or on the way south from it will have you finding yourself in Iron Hat’s neighborhood. Their opening salvo of beers is only four deep, but has enjoyed rave reviews since emerging. Given that the Newell is one of their flagship beers, showing up on the opening slate, you’re in for an auspicious beginning to a new brewery's life. The Newell Brown Ale follows the classic style but with a far more laid back flavour profile. Perfect beer for a night at the pub or in front of the hearth. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months.
